Two People in a 396 sq ft Studio?
About three years ago, Maria joined Victor in his tiny East Vancouver apartment
The studio was at the top floor of a building, with a rent of about $2,000- for a little more than 500- square feet.
“It had a stove, a sink and a fridge-that’s all” Maria said – “at home, I cook and Victor cleans”
Maria, 31, who is originally from Bucharest, Romania yearned to buy a home. In a rental, she said, “you never can relax. In my mind, you always have to worry about the lease, if the place will be sold and ultimately this is not your place.”
Victor, 35, who is from Barcelona, Spain, felt no particular urgency to buy, although it did seem financially prudent. “I came to Vancouver to work as a Chef and ended up in the Downtown East Side Area” he said. “In the back of my head, I always thought living here was going to be a temporary situation, that I would go back to Barcelona. But now I have a family.” The two were married last September in Kitsilano.
Maria constantly browsed online listings, and last winter the couple decided to visit some open houses. They were hoping to find a studio in the West End, for about $500,000-, although they could pay more if necessary.
They absolutely wanted to be near Stanley Park, preferring a smaller place close-by to a bigger one elsewhere in Vancouver. When they first moved into their Lions Studio at 1331 Alberni St, Maria felt it was crowded with people and traffic, but it had grown on them. The couple often walk their Dachshund Bonnie in Stanley Park. They both enjoy walking to their offices in Downtown Vancouver, where Maria works as a web designer and Victor at a Gastown restaurant.
“One essential element to us was a nice kitchen-and we got what we wanted at The Lions” – Victor said
They also wanted the freedom allowing them to rent their Studio if they wished – and they got that as well.
