December again for Gilbert, enjoying his “traditional” time off…
…as he’s been in the business since land lines were The Thing.
There are many days when Gilbert is approached for his wisdom…
…and straight-shooting views of almost everything
A friend’s son took as his bride a girl of his own age – eighteen
Imagine his surprise when, three month later, his new wife gave birth
Naïve as he was about such matters, but nevertheless astounded
The young man rushed to Gilbert’s house for an explanation
“Gilbert,” he exclaimed, “you will find this difficult to believe, but my wife gave birth to a baby”
“Wives usually do” commented the sage Gilbert
“But we have only been married three months.
My own mother, she should rest in peace, told me it takes nine months to have a baby.
Believe me, Gilbert, I am terribly worried!”
Gilbert took a few minutes to deeply reflect upon this strange turn of events.
“Son, we will solve this mystery with logic, through the asking of questions…
First, you have been married for three months?”
“Yes, Gilbert!”
“Your wife has lived with you for three months?”
“Yes, Gilbert!”
“And you have lived with your wife for three months?”
“Yes!!!”
“There you have it, young man.
Add up the total: Three months, plus three months, plus three months.
How much is that?”
“Nine months, Gilbert!”
“Correct,” said Gilbert gently. “Peace be with you.”
“Now go home to your wife and nine-months baby.”
