A new study from the Canadian Medical Association Journal has concluded that survival rates from cardiac arrest decrease the higher up the building a person lives. They studied over 8,000- adults who suffered heart attacks between January 2007 and December 2012 in the Metro Toronto Area.
Results were in, as follows, for the survival rates:
→ 4.2% for people living below the 3rd floor level
→ 2.6% for people living on or above the 3rd floor and up to the 15th floor
→ 0.9% survival rate for people above the 16th floor
→ 0% survival rate for those living above the 25th floor
Looks like the obvious delay to getting to the patient – building elevators – is lowering the residents’ chance of survival. No matter how rich, poor or simply in-between, the higher the floor you lived on, the lower the survival rate.

Will this eventually impact the Vancouver market?
In Downtown Vancouver, the floor elevation usually adds $3,000- to $5,000- per floor, making an 8th floor level condo to be likely at least $40,000- cheaper when compared to an identical 20th floor condo investment.
Many Buyers already show preferences for lower floors.
Some do it for safety reasons, as the Fire Dept.’s ladder only reaches the 5th floor in Vancouver, while others because of height aversion. Factoring in that survival rates drop dramatically the higher up you live in a high-rise, will most definitely be a factor with specific buyers, people downsizing from a “house” situation and Baby Boomers.
However, as well expected, the penthouse is in a league of its own. No worries there, at the top
